What's going on

Maybe you're self-employed, between jobs, or your employer doesn't offer coverage. Maybe you're comparing plans during open enrollment or after a life event that qualifies you to enroll outside that window. This is where to start.

Why it matters

Individual and family health insurance is separate from Medicare, which is specifically for people 65 and older or with certain qualifying conditions. Outside of open enrollment, you generally need a qualifying life event — like losing other coverage, getting married, or having a child — to enroll in or change a plan. Understanding your enrollment window and how plans differ in premium, deductible, and network is the first step before comparing options.

Things worth considering

Points we would talk through with you. Which of them apply depends on your situation, and what you do about them is your decision.

  1. Are you enrolling during open enrollment or after a qualifying life event?

Health insurance enrollment is generally limited to an annual open enrollment period unless you have a qualifying life event, such as losing other coverage or a change in household. Knowing your window matters.

  2. How does the plan balance premium and deductible?

Lower monthly premiums usually come with higher deductibles, and vice versa. What each option would cost you depends on how you expect to use the plan.

  3. Are your doctors and providers in the plan's network?

Networks vary by plan and by company. If you have providers you want to keep, it's worth checking whether they're included before comparing further.

  4. Does the plan cover the prescriptions you take?

Formularies differ between plans. If you take regular medications, it's worth confirming how each plan handles them.

  5. Is this coverage for yourself only, or your whole household?

Individual and family plans price and structure differently. What fits one person in a household may not fit everyone on it.

Information on this website is general in nature and is not a complete description of any insurance policy or every coverage option that may be available. Coverage availability, terms, conditions, limits and exclusions vary by insurer, policy and individual circumstances. The issued insurance policy and applicable endorsements control coverage. Beacon Point Insurance Group may provide information regarding available insurance options and discuss coverage considerations based on information you provide, but customers are responsible for selecting the carrier, coverages, limits and deductibles they wish to purchase. No insurance coverage is bound, changed, or canceled through this website unless confirmed by Beacon Point Insurance Group or the applicable insurer.

How this tends to come up

  • Comparing plans after leaving employer coverage

An Independence resident who left a job with employer-sponsored health insurance had 60 days to enroll elsewhere. Comparing available options ahead of that deadline gave them time to make an informed decision.

  • A plan that didn't include a preferred provider

A Kansas City area family picked a plan based mainly on premium and later found their pediatrician was out of network. A review before enrolling would have surfaced that upfront.
