Accessibility

This site should work for you.

If it does not, that is a problem we want to hear about — and in the meantime we can give you the same information over the phone.

What we are aiming at

Our target for this website is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. That is the standard most public bodies and courts point to, and it covers the things that actually stop people using a site: contrast, keyboard access, clear labels, predictable structure and control over motion.

Insurance is already hard enough to read. A website that makes it harder is not doing its job, so this is treated as part of the build rather than something added at the end.

What is built in

Each of these applies to every page on the site, not to a few of them.

  • Structure a screen reader can follow

Pages are built from real headings, lists, landmarks and buttons rather than styled <div> elements. Headings run in order, so you can move through a page by heading and not lose your place.

  • Everything works from the keyboard

You can reach every link, menu, field and button with Tab alone. A "Skip to main content" link is the first thing you reach on every page, and the navigation menus open on keyboard focus rather than only on hover.

  • Focus you can see

The keyboard focus indicator is a solid ring in a colour chosen to stand out against both the light pages and the dark footer. It is never removed.

  • Motion stays out of the way

There are no carousels that move on their own and nothing animates as you scroll. If your device is set to reduce motion, the remaining transitions are switched off site-wide rather than component by component.

  • Contrast and text size

Body text and headings are set against their backgrounds at or above the WCAG AA contrast ratio, and small print uses a darker grey than body text for the same reason. Text scales with your browser zoom and reflows rather than clipping.

  • Targets big enough to hit

Links, buttons and form controls are at least 44 by 44 pixels, including the phone number and the persistent button at the bottom of the screen on a phone.

  • Forms with real labels

Every field has a visible label attached to it. Nothing uses placeholder text in place of a label, so the label does not disappear once you start typing. Errors are described in words, not only by turning a border red.

  • Images that say something

Photographs that carry meaning have alternative text. Icons that sit beside a label are marked decorative so they are not read out twice.

What we know is not finished

An accessibility statement that lists only successes is not much use. These are the gaps we are aware of today.

  • The Client Portal is a separate system

The portal is run by another company and its accessibility is outside our control. If something there blocks you, call us and we will handle the request directly instead.

  • Insurance documents are not always tagged

Policy documents, declarations pages and forms come from the insurance companies as PDFs, and some of them are scans or are not tagged for screen readers. Ask us and we will read a document to you or send the information in another format.

  • No independent audit yet

This site has been built and checked against WCAG 2.2 Level AA by the people who built it. It has not yet been through a third-party accessibility audit, and we would rather say so than imply a review that has not happened.

  • Not every assistive technology has been tested

We cannot claim to have tested every combination of browser, operating system and screen reader. If yours behaves differently from what this page describes, that is worth telling us about.

Tell us about a problem

If a page will not work for you, contact us and say which page it was and what happened — the address in your browser bar and a sentence is plenty. We will look at it, and while we do, we will give you the same information another way: over the phone, by email, in large print, or in person at the office.

Office hours are Monday–Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm. If you would rather not use this website at all, that is a reasonable choice — call and a person will walk you through the same options. Every question on the insurance review form can be answered out loud instead.
