Understand what your homeowners policy does and doesn't do for an RV.

What's going on

Whether an RV, travel trailer, or camper is covered by an existing policy depends heavily on the vehicle and how it's used, and people often assume more coverage exists than actually does. If you own or are buying an RV of any kind, it's worth understanding what a dedicated RV policy typically covers before you're relying on it.

Why it matters

A motorized RV generally needs its own auto-type liability coverage, similar to a car, since a standard auto policy usually doesn't extend to it. A towable trailer or camper may have some liability coverage while attached to a covered tow vehicle, but that typically doesn't extend to the trailer's contents or to time spent parked at a campsite. A dedicated RV policy is generally built to address these situations more completely than piecing together homeowners and auto coverage.

Things worth considering

Points we would talk through with you. Which of them apply depends on your situation, and what you do about them is your decision.

  1. Is your RV motorized or towable?

This distinction affects what kind of coverage applies. A motorized RV typically needs its own liability coverage; a towable unit's coverage depends more on how it's insured relative to your tow vehicle.

  2. Does your policy cover the RV while parked at a campsite?

Some coverage that applies while towing or driving doesn't extend to time spent parked and in use as a temporary residence. It's worth asking specifically about this.

  3. What about the belongings you keep inside it?

Personal property kept in the RV, such as furnishings or equipment, may need to be addressed separately from the vehicle itself.

  4. Do you use the RV full-time or seasonally?

How often and how you use the RV can affect what coverage options are available and worth considering.

  5. Does the policy include roadside assistance or towing?

This can matter given the distances an RV may travel. It's worth confirming whether it's included or available as an add-on.

  6. Have you made modifications or added attached equipment?

Awnings, satellite equipment, or other permanently attached additions may need to be reflected in the coverage.

How this tends to come up

  • Assuming an auto policy covered the RV

A Kansas City metro family bought a motorized RV and assumed their existing auto policy would extend to it the way it did their car. It didn't, which came up before their first road trip.

  • A towable camper parked at a campsite

An Independence couple towed a camper to a campground for a weekend and later asked whether their coverage applied while it was parked and they were using it as a temporary living space, separate from the drive there.
