A couple in their sixties sitting together at home.

Your situation

You're turning 65. Here's how Medicare actually fits together.

Medicare has parts, deadlines, and two broadly different approaches to filling the gaps. Understanding the shape of it first makes the choices much less stressful.

What's going on

Your 65th birthday is coming, the mail has started arriving, and everyone has an opinion. You would like someone to lay out how the pieces fit together before you are asked to choose between them.

Why it matters

Medicare is not one decision — it is several, taken in a particular order and inside particular enrollment windows. Some of those windows only come around once. The choice between a Medicare Supplement approach and a Medicare Advantage approach also has consequences that are easier to weigh up front than to revisit later.

Things worth considering

Points we would talk through with you. Which of them apply depends on your situation, and what you do about them is your decision.

  1. The parts, in plain terms

Part A covers hospital services. Part B covers medical services. Part D covers prescription drugs. Part C, called Medicare Advantage, is a way of receiving your Part A and Part B benefits through a private plan.

  2. Your Initial Enrollment Period

The Initial Enrollment Period runs for seven months around your 65th birthday — the three months before, your birthday month, and the three months after. Enrolling late can carry a lasting penalty in some circumstances.

  3. Whether you are still working

If you or your spouse are still covered by an employer group plan, the timing changes. This is one of the most common places people get tripped up, and it is worth a specific conversation rather than a general rule.

  4. Two different approaches to the gaps

A Medicare Supplement plan works alongside Original Medicare and is standardised by plan letter. A Medicare Advantage plan replaces how you receive your benefits and usually operates a network. They behave differently on cost, on networks, and on what happens if you travel or want to change later.

  5. Prescription drugs

Drug coverage is handled separately under Original Medicare and is often built into a Medicare Advantage plan. Either way, the specific medications you take should be part of the comparison.

  6. Your own doctors

If keeping particular physicians matters to you, check how each option treats them before deciding, not after.

Information on this website is general in nature and is not a complete description of any insurance policy or every coverage option that may be available. Coverage availability, terms, conditions, limits and exclusions vary by insurer, policy and individual circumstances. The issued insurance policy and applicable endorsements control coverage. Beacon Point Insurance Group may provide information regarding available insurance options and discuss coverage considerations based on information you provide, but customers are responsible for selecting the carrier, coverages, limits and deductibles they wish to purchase. No insurance coverage is bound, changed, or canceled through this website unless confirmed by Beacon Point Insurance Group or the applicable insurer.

How this tends to come up

  • Retiring at 65

Employer coverage ends and Medicare begins. The sequence and the dates matter, and getting them lined up avoids both a gap and a penalty.

  • Working past 65 with group coverage

Someone staying on an employer plan may have a different timeline than the standard one. The right answer depends on the specific employer plan.
