Your situation

There's a new driver in the house. Here's what changes.

Adding a teenager to an auto policy is one of the largest premium changes most households ever see. Knowing what drives it gives you something to work with.

What's going on

Someone in your house just got a permit or a license. You have heard the premium is about to jump, and you are not sure when you are supposed to tell the insurer, or what your options are once you do.

Why it matters

A new driver is a change your insurer needs to know about, and how that driver is rated — which vehicle they are assigned to, whether they are listed or excluded, what discounts apply — makes a real difference to both the premium and to how a claim would be handled. These are choices, and they are easier to make on purpose than to unwind later.

Things worth considering

Points we would talk through with you. Which of them apply depends on your situation, and what you do about them is your decision.

  1. When to add them

Practice varies by insurer. Some want a permit holder listed straight away, others at licensing. Ask your insurer directly rather than assuming, because guessing wrong can affect a claim.

  2. Which vehicle they are assigned to

Insurers assign drivers to vehicles for rating. Assigning a new driver to the least expensive vehicle to repair, rather than the newest one, is often part of the conversation.

  3. Discounts specific to young drivers

Good student discounts, driver training course credits, student-away-at-school discounts and telematics programs are commonly available. Which ones apply depends on the insurer and on the student.

  4. Your liability limits

Missouri's minimum auto liability requirement is 25/50/25 — $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, $25,000 for property damage. A new driver is a natural moment to look at whether the limits you carry are the ones you want, and whether an umbrella policy belongs in the conversation.

  5. Comprehensive and collision on an older car

If the teen's car has a low value, whether to carry physical damage coverage on it is a genuine decision rather than an automatic yes.

Information on this website is general in nature and is not a complete description of any insurance policy or every coverage option that may be available. Coverage availability, terms, conditions, limits and exclusions vary by insurer, policy and individual circumstances. The issued insurance policy and applicable endorsements control coverage. Beacon Point Insurance Group may provide information regarding available insurance options and discuss coverage considerations based on information you provide, but customers are responsible for selecting the carrier, coverages, limits and deductibles they wish to purchase. No insurance coverage is bound, changed, or canceled through this website unless confirmed by Beacon Point Insurance Group or the applicable insurer.

How this tends to come up

  • A junior with a permit

The household calls before the road test rather than after, finds out their insurer wants the permit holder listed, and has time to compare what a full license will do to the premium across a few companies.

  • A student leaving for college

A student attending school more than a set distance from home without a vehicle may qualify for a discount with some insurers. It is worth asking each year.
