A household reviewing an insurance renewal notice at a kitchen table.

Your situation

Your insurance rates went up. Here's how to work out why.

A renewal came in higher than last year. Before shopping on price alone, it helps to understand what changed — because the same premium can buy very different coverage.

No obligation. Starting a review does not change or bind any coverage.

What's going on

You opened the renewal and the number was higher than you expected. Nothing obvious changed — no claims, no tickets, same house, same cars — and the premium still moved.

Why it matters

A rate increase is worth understanding before you react to it. Two policies at the same price can carry very different deductibles, limits and exclusions, so switching on premium alone can quietly change what you are covered for. Knowing what moved your rate tells you whether shopping will help, and what to compare when you do.

Things worth considering

Points we would talk through with you. Which of them apply depends on your situation, and what you do about them is your decision.

  1. What actually changed on the policy

Compare this year's declarations page against last year's. Dwelling coverage, deductibles and endorsements are often adjusted at renewal, and an inflation guard provision can raise your dwelling limit automatically.

  2. Whether the increase is yours or everyone's

Insurers file rate changes by state and territory. An increase applied across a whole book of business is a different situation from one driven by a claim, a ticket, or a change in a credit-based insurance score.

  3. Your deductible

Raising a deductible generally lowers the premium, and also lowers how much the insurer would pay on a covered claim. It is a trade worth making deliberately rather than by default.

  4. Discounts that may no longer apply

Bundling, paid-in-full, telematics, alarm and claims-free discounts can drop off between terms. It is worth asking which ones are on the policy today.

  5. Whether comparable coverage is available elsewhere

As an independent agency we can obtain and compare available options from the insurance companies we represent, and show you the differences side by side.

Information on this website is general in nature and is not a complete description of any insurance policy or every coverage option that may be available. Coverage availability, terms, conditions, limits and exclusions vary by insurer, policy and individual circumstances. The issued insurance policy and applicable endorsements control coverage. Beacon Point Insurance Group may provide information regarding available insurance options and discuss coverage considerations based on information you provide, but customers are responsible for selecting the carrier, coverages, limits and deductibles they wish to purchase. No insurance coverage is bound, changed, or canceled through this website unless confirmed by Beacon Point Insurance Group or the applicable insurer.

How this tends to come up

  • A renewal that moved without a claim

A household with no claims sees a double-digit increase. The declarations page shows the dwelling limit rose under an inflation guard provision, and the paid-in-full discount came off when billing switched to monthly. Neither of those is visible from the premium alone.

  • A comparison that confirms staying put

Sometimes the comparison shows the current insurer is still the stronger option on coverage and price. That is a useful outcome too — you stop wondering.
